Energy tests
The Dell P713w, like most inkjets these days, consumes a small amount of energy even when performing its most challenging tasks.   In ready mode, the P713w uses about 9 W of energy while in sleep mode the number is reduced to about 5 W of energy.

When performing tasks, the P713w never used more than 22 W of energy.  Typically, when printing, the P713w hovered in the range of 17-19 W, but it did spike to 22 W.  When aligning the print head or preparing newly installed inks, the P713w used about 17 to 20 W of energy.

The P713w has an eco-mode quick key located in the main menu for controlling power saving modes and duplex printing but simply hitting the power key will take the P713w from ready to sleep mode instantly.

PROS

  • Easy to navigate touch screen
  • Eco-friendly features
  • Good draft print quality

CONS

  • No dedicated photo tray
  • Weird linear pattern with low-res images

CONCLUSION
Dell is definitely headed in the right direction with the second generation P713w All-in-One.  They fixed the wireless connectivity issue I had with the first generation P703w and added USB compatibility to the built-in memory card reader while sticking with most of the things they got right in the first model

However, I was disappointed that P713w did not offer a dedicated photo tray like the P703w because I often forget what paper I have loaded between jobs and this of course is a recipe for wasted photo paper.   I was also concerned about the weird pattern that was visible in printed low-resolution photos.

Despite these two issues, I felt like overall print quality was good.  The high-res 8x10 balloon images I printed were vibrant and accurate while the P713w offers an excellent draft mode along with a solid automatic print mode.  Print speeds weren’t as fast as advertised but better than the first generation P703w.

Overall, the Dell P713w is a step up from the P703w thanks to new features, improved wireless functionality, and a cool, easy to use touch screen.  Plus, priced at less than $200, the P713w is an affordable option for users looking to upgrade to a multi-function device without breaking the bank.
