Printer Tip No. 15
With mobile devices becoming increasingly popular, the amount of content created on the go has increased exponentially. And while there are plenty of great options for sharing this content digitally, what if you want to print a family photo from vacation or receipts from your latest business trip?
Well, have no fear, because mobile printing is here (lame joke, I know). But seriously, almost every major print manufacturer we cover on PrinterComparison now offers a mobile print application for consumers and businesses alike.
The first step is to figure out what device you own or interact with be it Android, Apple, etc. and what brand of printer you are trying to send your documents or images to for printing. In order to print to any device, said printer will need to be set up over a network connection. Almost every printer announced over the last few years has built-in network connectivity but legacy devices might not have this capability. If your home or office device falls into the latter, you can check mobile print capability on the manufacturer's website.
Once you've confirmed that your printer is on a network (wired or wireless), you'll need to download the mobile print app (unless you own the new Samsung Galaxy S4 AND a HP printer).
Most manufacturers offer their mobile print apps for Apple and Android devices. For instance, a quick search of the word "print" in Apple's App Store will bring up brand name apps from HP, Epson and Canon as well as generic print apps. But if you are running a different device (like the BlackBerry Bold provided by my company) you may run into some issues. You can get around these issues by using a cloud based mobile offerings such as Google Cloud Print, HP ePrint or Epson Connect, to name a few.
There are so many mobile devices offered today that it's hard to give step by step instructions for printing but having tested all of the mobile apps listed above, I can assure users that most are very easy to setup as well as use. You will find that some are limited in use but already we've seen multiple generations of the mobile applications so we predict they will get more handy moving forward. But for a simple photo print, document print or even scan, you'll find that mobile printing can be very useful!
