Brother introduced a new line of monochrome laser printers for small office environments earlier this year. We've reviewed the single function HL-5470dw and the HL-6180dw printers but now it's time to turn our focus on one of the multifunction lasers, the MFC-8710dw.
The Brother MFC-8710dw is replacing a previous generation MFP in the lineup and offers print, scan, copy and fax functionality in a compact package. Other features include print speeds up to 40 ppm, automatic duplexing, 50-sheet automatic document feeder, a legal-size flatbed scanner and a 300-sheet paper capacity.
Build and Design
The MFC-8710dw is a mixture of dark gray and black paneling with the approximate dimensions of 19 x 16 x 18-inches and weighing in at 36 lbs. without consumables. The bottom is smaller than the top thanks to the legal-sized flatbed glass giving it a flowering look.
The 50-sheet ADF is found on top of the scanner lid for scanning, copying and faxing large documents hands free. The MFC-8710dw has a maximum scan resolution of 1200 x 1200 dpi and offers several scan-to features including email, OCR, file, FTP, USB, network folder and Brother iPrint&Scan mobile app.
The control panel runs across the front of the device with the monochrome LCD in the middle. There are three main device keys - fax, scan and copy - as well as a four directional navigation, alphanumeric key pad, eight speeds dial buttons and 11 quick keys. The front side USB port is directly beneath the control panel, to the left of the 150-sheet output tray.
Press the button in the middle of the output tray and pull out to access the single monochrome toner cartridge. The MFC-8710dw comes with a standard yield toner cartridge but customers can purchase a high yield replacement toner cartridge.
The 50-sheet multipurpose tray pulls out from the front of the device and is made for less traditional media while the 250-sheet paper tray pulls out from the bottom of the printer. Need more paper capacity? Add a second 500-sheet paper tray to up the capacity to 800 sheets.
All the connections are found on the back of the MFC-8710dw. The MFC-8710dw offers three connectivity options including: wireless 802.11 b/g/n, Ethernet and hi-speed USB 2.0.
