Epson introduced the Expression Photo XP-850 Small-in-One inkjet printer at the end of October, a full month after unveiling the Expression Premium Series, including the Expression Premium XP-800 Small-in-One.

The difference between the Expression Photo XP-850 and Expression Premium XP-800 are minor with the Expression Photo XP-850 adding an additional Claria ink to the mix for improved photo quality as well as quick photo print speeds.

Today, we'll be sharing our full review where we compare the Expression Premium XP-800 and the Expression Photo XP-850 head to head!

Build and Design

Superficially, the Expression Photo XP-850 is built the same as the Expression Premium XP-800 with a glossy black design, sleek curve at the top and an adjustable touch panel with a 3.5-inch LCD in the center. The dimensions are the same as well coming in at 15 x 13 x 8 inches in non use and 17 x 24 x 8 inches with the ADF folded out and the auto extend output tray in use.

The Expression Photo XP-850 offers a 30-page automatic document feeder that folds into the scanner lid when not in use. Customers can scan, copy and fax single or double-sided documents easily without having to stand at the machine to switch out or flip over individual sheets.

Thanks to the ADF and rear multipurpose tray, customers can also print, scan, copy and fax up to 8.5 x 14 inches. For photo prints and other images, you can also scan items up to 8.5 x 11 inches using the 48-bit color flatbed scanner.

With the front side USB port and memory card reader, you scan to or print from a variety of media including a USB flash drive, PictBridge camera/phone, SD, SDXC, SDHC, Memory Stick Duo and Compact Flash. Or skip the media and print from the cloud using Epson Connect, Epson iPrint mobile app, Apple AirPrint or Goggle Cloud Print.

Lift up at the middle to access the six Claria Photo HD ink cartridges in Black, Cyan, Light Cyan, Magenta, Light Magenta and Yellow. The Expression Photo XP-850 comes with a set of standard capacity ink, but users can purchase high capacity replacement cartridges.

The Expression Photo XP-850 offers CD/DVD printing with the CD/DVD tray resides under the printer. To use, simply pull out the tray, place your CD/DVD and slide into the device directly above the output tray (there are arrows placed at the entrance).

You'll also find a 20-sheet dedicated photo tray and 100-sheet input tray in the same located. You can print on a variety of paper ranging from 3.5 x 5 inches up to 8.5 x 11 inches using these trays. For unique projects - think card stock, envelopes, legal sized paper - use the rear paper tray.

All connections are found on the back of the Expression Photo XP-850 as well as access to the paper path and the rear fed tray.
