Canon Pixma MX922 Review: First Look

By Sarah Meyer, PrinterComparison Editor | | 3670 Reads

CES 2013 was a big show for Canon's office lineup with announcement of four new Pixma Office inkjet printers and two new imageCLASS laser printers. And we're excited to announce that we now have the Pixma Office lineup in for review!

We'll be starting with the flagship Canon Pixma MX922 offering some noticeable upgrades from the previous generation Pixma MX892 including: faster print speeds up to 15 ipm in black and 10 ipm in color, dual front loading paper trays (as opposed to the front/rear tray before), a larger 250-sheet paper cassette and My Image Garden software (previously found on consumer products).

Want to know more? Get a hands-on first look with us of the new Pixma MX922's specs, build, design, pricing and more all before the expected release date in March. Not enough info to make a purchasing decision? Check back soon for our full review when we'll share the results from our battery of tests!

Build and Design

At first glance, the Pixma MX922 may look quite similar to the previous generation MX892 but it actually features more compact dimensions coming in at 19 x 16 x 9 inches in non use (compared to the MX892's 19 x 18 x 9 inches) and adds a little color to the design with a maroon (that's my best guess on the color, I'm totally left brained) dash that fades into black on the front panel.

Canon continues to include the duplexing automatic document feeder (I love this is becoming a standard feature on business models) that folds out from the top of the lid allowing customers to easily scan, copy or fax multipage documents. The scan lid also lifts up all the way around for better quality scans of "3D" books, magazines, etc.

The control panel is identical to past generation office models with the 3-inch LCD, dual function panel (with intelligent touch), four device keys and a few quick keys. The front side USB port is located on the bottom left corner of the device.

But as soon as you pull open the front panel of the Pixma MX922, you'll start to notice design changes with a major one being the inclusion of CD/DVD printing. The CD/DVD tray is actually attached to the back of the 20-sheet photo tray. After you unhook it, you'll need to slide it in where the front opening folds out (marked by a white arrow).

This is also the same area where you will load the five individual ink cartridges. Canon provides a set of five "setup" inks and you can purchase replacement ink cartridges in standard capacity and high capacity.

The paper capacity and feed was changed on the Pixma MX922 as well. Gone is the rear fed tray replaced by two front loading trays: a 20-sheet photo tray (with CD/DVD tray attached) and a 250-sheet paper cassette. This is by far the biggest improvement in my humble opinion.

All the connections are found on the back of the device. The Pixma MX922 can be connected via a USB 2.0, Ethernet or Wireless LAN connection.

Pixma MX922 Specifications:

  • 4-in-1 inkjet: print, scan, copy and fax
  • Print speeds: 15 ipm in black, 10 ipm in color
  • Print resolution: up to 9600 x 2400 dpi
