Quick Take:
The Brother MFC-J4510dw Business Smart Inkjet All-in-One is an excellent step forward for Brother in the SOHO/SMB market.

Brother introduced their new Business Smart Series geared towards, you guessed it, small businesses, workgroups and home offices earlier this fall at an exclusive event in NYC. The lineup consists of three all-in-one inkjets that will "deliver ultra fast print speeds and the world's slimmest depth", but we'll be reviewing the flagship MFC-J4510dw, the first configuration to be released to customers.

The MFC-J4510dw offers prints up to 11 x 17-inches despite the compact footprint, which Brother claims is 35 percent less than competitor's models. Other new features include: 3.7-inch Swipe TouchScreen Display and TouchPanel, 20-sheet automatic document feeder, automatic duplexing and both wired and wireless connectivity.

Find out if Brother has truly designed a business smart printer or if the MFC-J4510dw is just a refresh of the past.

Build and Design

The Brother MFC-J4510dw is definitely slimmer than previous generations, but I wasn't positive that the footprint was 35 percent smaller. So I looked for all-in-one inkjets that are targeted at small business, fall in the $200 price range and offer print speeds at least 15 ppm. The Epson WorkForce 845 and HP Officejet 6700 Premium fell into this category.

For the record, the MFC-J4510dw comes in at 19 x 11 x 7-inches in non-use and weighs 20 lbs. without consumables. The WorkForce 845 comes in at 18 x 22 x 12-inches in non-use and the Officejet 6700 Premium comes in at 18 x 19 x 10-inches in non-use. I'm terrible at math so I have no way of knowing if that equates to 35 percent, but it is definitely smaller. Of course, both competitors offer a larger paper capacity (HP with 250 sheets and Epson with 500 sheets) than the MFC-J4510dw so you win some, you lose some.

The design is interesting with a mixture of gray and black paneling centered around the touch control panel with a 3.7-inch touchscreen. Adjacent to the control panel is the built-in memory card reader and front side USB port, hidden behind a small panel.

While it may not look like it at first glance due to the flat top and thin form factor, the MFC-J4510dw does offer a 20-sheet ADF for scanning, copying and faxing multi-page documents quickly and easily. The 8.5 x 11.7-inch flatbed scanner is located directly beneath the ADF.

The MFC-J4510dw offers customers the ability to print documents and images up to 11 x 17-inches thanks to a single sheet rear fold out tray found on the back of the device. The 150-sheet paper tray found on the front of the device can accommodate media up to 8.5 x 11-inches.

I love that manufacturers are starting to use a front loading ink system with Brother being one of the first to offer this easy-to-use feature on their all-in-one inkjets. The MFC-J4510dw uses four LC103 ink cartridges (CMYK) and offers high yield and super high yield ink replacements.

You will find all the connections (minus the attached power cord) by lifting up at the middle of the MFC-J4510dw. On the back of the device you'll find the previously mentioned single sheet 11 x 17-inch rear tray and access to the paper path.
