Brother MFC-J430w Review: Low Cost, Limited Features

Brother unveiled a new series of affordable all-in-one inkjets targeted at the small office/ home office market earlier this fall including the MFC-J825dw and the MFC-J625dw, but it's the MFC-J430w we'll be taking a look at today.

The 4-in-1 MFC-J430w falls in the middle of the series at a price point of $99.99 so it lacks some of the high-end features we saw on the MFC-J825dw and MFC-J625dw. What it does offer are print, scan, copy and fax functionality as well as print speeds up to 10 ppm in black and 8 ppm in color, a print resolution up to 6000 x 1200 dpi, 1.9-inch LCD, a 100-sheet paper tray, front loading ink cartridges and wireless connectivity.

BUILD AND DESIGN
The MFC-J430w may not offer all the features we saw on the higher end models from this series, but it does share the exact same body style and dimensions, measuring in at approximately 16 x 15 x 7 inches. You'll also find the same flip out glossy 20-sheet ADF panel, basic control panel setup and 100-sheet paper drawer.

Lift underneath the ADF and you'll find the 48-bit flatbed scanner. While the ADF can handle documents up to legal size, the maximum scan size for the flatbed is 8.5 x 11.7 inches with an optical scan resolution up to 2400 x 1200 dpi.

One of the noticeable differences is the lack of a front side USB port and/or memory card reader. The quick device key for photos is gone, leaving three main quick keys: fax, scan and copy. Without the touchscreen found on the other three models, the MFC-J430w also includes a four directional navigation next to the standard alphanumerical key pad.

Brother still offers the same four cartridge ink system with Innobella inks and a convenient front loading system. I've noticed recently that other manufacturers have taken notice of this style. I wouldn't be surprised if other's start replicating it.

The 50-sheet retractable output tray and 100-sheet paper tray are located in the center of the device. Unlike its big sisters, the MFC-J430w does not offer a separate 20-sheet photo bypass tray.
