The cream of the crop of Epson's all-in-one photo lineup, the Artisan series, continues to make strides forward with its latest additions, the Artisan 837 and Artisan 730, revealed last month.

The flagship of the Artisan lineup, the Artisan 837, will replace the previous generation Artisan 835 with slight improvements to the design and features. The question then becomes: are the differences enough to sway buyers over the older model that will most likely be discounted to make way for the Artisan 837?

Today, we'll take a look at the design changes, go over improved features and new offerings and share the results of our full battery of tests. So read on now to find out how the Epson Artisan 837 ranked with us!

BUILD AND DESIGN
In Epson's press release, much was made of the sleek, compact design with midnight blue accents. And while I agree that the Artisan 837 does have a sleek look with the mixture of glossy black, matte black and midnight blue, I'm not sure it's stopping traffic. And the actual dimensions are nearly identical to the previous generation Artisan 835 coming in at 18 x 18 x 8 inches in non use and 18 x 26 x 8 inches when printing.

The 30-page fold out automatic document feeder remains the same on the Artisan 837 in both design and functionality. Scan, copy or fax large documents up to legal size quickly without having to remove each single sheet from the flatbed.

The 48-bit flatbed scanner can accommodate documents or images up to 8.5 x 11.7 inches with a maximum optical resolution of 4800 dpi. Scan to a file, USB drive, memory card, email, etc. or create unique projects like coloring books, greeting cards and more.

The Artisan 837 features the 7.8-inch smart touch panel with a 3.5-inch LCD the lineup is known for but with improved brightness. The panel is adjustable and only lights up keys that are relevant to the task you are performing on the printer.

Lift from the center to access the inside of the Artisan 837. Epson keeps the six cartridge ink system stationary allowing for the print head to move more easily. The Artisan 837 comes with six dye based Claria Hi-Definition ink cartridges: five standard capacity color cartridges and one high capacity black cartridges. High capacity ink cartridge replacements in all six colors are available.

Epson does change the design of the Artisan 837 slightly with the inclusion of a folding panel on the lower front half of the device. Behind it are the paper trays, built-in memory card reader and front side USB/PictBridge port.

The built-in card reader is compatible with a variety of media including: SDXC cards, SD cards, Memory Stick and Compact Flash. To the left of the card reader is the front side USB/PictBridge port.

The extendable output tray holds up to 30 pages while the input capacity is 140 sheets between the 120-sheet paper tray and 20-sheet photo tray. Epson also includes CD/DVD prints as with past models.

You'll find all connections on the back of the Artisan 837. Users can choose from a Hi-Speed USB 2.0, Ethernet or wireless connection. You can also access the paper path directly by removing the back piece.
